1) ? eh, I went backwards and ran out of numbers: P 2) refer to 5
3) refer to 5
4. "ANDing"? My best guess: Well, if you compare each word bit-by-bit, the output should be a 1 if both are one, otherwise output is 0:
ie. 01101 AND 11010
.........01101 AND..11010 ----------------- ........01000.............<--there's only one digit in there that is "1" for both numbers
------------------------------------
5)
Convert the binary number 01011011 into its hexadecimal equivalent. Select the correct answer from the list below. There's a great technique for this one! Bit-grouping! All you need is a table of Hex numbers in binary 0 - 0000 1 - 0001 2 - 0010 3 - 0011 4 - 0100 5 - 0101 6 - 0110 7 - 0111 8 - 1000 9 - 1001 A - 1010 B - 1011 C - 1100 D - 1101 E - 1110 F - 1111
For hexadecimal, split the binary up into groups of four. Look at each group and convert directly into the Hex number;
"0101 1011"
0101 in hex is? (use the table above) 1011 in hex is?
ie, if we had "0001 1001"
Hex is 19
ie, if we had "1000 1111"
Hex is: 8F
(This technique also works for octal... but you take groups of three)
7) refer to 10
8) refer to 10
9) In an 8 bit binary number, what is the total number of combinations of the eight bits?
8 bits in an unsigned binary number = 2 ^ (8-1) (remember that all the positions we look at in binary are zero-based [ start at 0] )
-------------------------------------- 10)
Repeated division:
ie. N base a -> N base b
*divide "N base a" by "b". Take the result and divide by "b" again. Repeat until division is no longer possible. In order, the remainders in reverse order are the desired number.
ie: convert 28 base 10 --> N base 2:
28/2 = 14 r 0 14/2 = 7 r 0 7/2 = 3 r 1 3/2 = 1 r 1 1/2 = 0 r 1
(take the remainders in order, bottom up = 11100)
Thus the eigh-bit representation is "0001 1011" (you have to pad the number with 0s so that there are 8 positions).
Likewise, if yer quick with powers of two, you can just look at it this way:
0000 0001 base 2 = 2^0 = 1 0000 0010 base 2 = 2^1 = 2 0000 0100 base 2 = 2^2 = 4 0000 1000 base 2= 2^3 = 8 0001 0000 base 2 = 2^4 = 16 0010 0000 base 2 = 2^5 = 32 0100 0000 base 2 = 2^6 = 64 etc
So, if you just look at the number (say, 116), you can intuitively think "Hey, that's less than 128 (2^7), thus the highest value you should have is 64 (2^6)... and add up from there.
64 + 32 + 16 = 112; gee, that's close
112 + 4 = 116
So, add these together and you have 116: 0001 0000 = 64 0010 0000 = 32 0100 0000 = 16 0000 0100 = 4
-----------------------
And if you don't trust me (hey, I wouldn't) -- Google it.

Then again, I look different from one photo to another, depending on did I get my coffee/Sobe that day? did Ryland piss me off last night? what color I was feeling that day? etc ad infinitum.
