I was there about 4 months ago Steve. Man what a gorgeous place! I wish I had a motorcycle, but even by car it was pretty awesome, especially that Chain of Craters Rd.

Woot! Miata roads! I'm there! Ugh... doh... I forgot that the car doesn't float. Darn. Maybe a rental would be available? BTW... are guys referring to somewhere on the Big Island? Sorry... I'm a bit geographically ignorant when it comes down to travelling outside of Oahu.

Yeah Voodoo, the island of Hawaii aka The Big Island. The road Steve & Sheep speaks of is called "Saddle road". Fresh, smooth & twisty blacktop surrounded by beautiful scenery & lots of lava .

Lava? HOlysheit, can you like touch it? Or Grill food on it? VR is talkin about lava that has been cooled. Most of the active lava is in the volcano national park. At 2000 degrees F that would be one heck of a BBQ. ;D

So far the trip has been sweet with 3 days of constant stuff to see. My friend is from here so he's showing me all the hidden sites etc... I got some fricking awesome shots. Kinda pondering leaving my bike at the end of the road to venture the 3 to 4 miles across loose lava rock to the active flow hitting the ocean. That would suck to come back and the bike was stolen. He to lazy to do it with me....shoots.

Sweet. When I go back to HI next fall, I'll be on that island for the wedding I'm attending. I'll have to check it out. I'm sure our friends can show us some sights.

Steve, take the hike. It's so worth it. It's not easy, and your sneakers might melt, but it's wild watching that red stuff ooze from the ground. My GF and I did the walk at night initially. We didn't make it, but watching the lava flow down the mountain and into the ocean was spectacular. You have a much better view of the lava at night, but let me tell you, that hike is dangerous. I almost fell off a damn cliff, not to mention bashing my knees and shins all over the uneven terrain. We hiked it again the next morning (it's a much easier hike in the daytime) and we actually made it to the flowing lava. The heat is INTENSE and we got really nervous. The lava that bubbles out of the ground cools quickly into the silvery gray rock so you have to be very careful you don't step onto a recently cooled patch of lava - it'll probably crack and burn your foot right off. The best time to go is probably just before sunset. Anyway, it's a rare opportunity so don't miss it!
