Title is: PurpLilly Artist: Monkey Camera: Sony DSC V1 Comments: Taken as color photo..Opened in Photoshop CS, used channel mixer, set Magenta to -100 to select only the red areas of the photo adding shades with eye dropper. saved this as layer mask. Desaturated remaining color, played with RGB's to bring out some detail in the background. Applied layer mask and changed from red to Purple.

Title: Shark's Marquee Artist: Monkey Camera: Sony DSC V1 Remarks: Used Photoshop CS...used Retangular Marquee Tool, Selected the area I wanted in color, saved as a layer. I increased the saturation and applied unsharp mask to the color selection. I drop shaddowed it, and put it back into position after desaturating and modifying greyscale portion..Going for that Ansel Adams feel to an otherwise uninspired photo.. This is one photo that is way more pleasing to the eye in B&W I felt.

Another fine example of your work. I do agree with you, Patric, that this image more than holds its own in B&W format. Did you say that it was a photograph of Shark's Cove? Is that on Oahu?

Sean, Yeah Sharks Cove is a popular tourist snorkelling area down on the Northern Shores of Oahu. Did you see it during your honeymoon? Never seen any sharks there...but plenty of tropical fish find there homes in the many rock formations.. Anyone know how it got its name?

It sounds familiar to me, so my wife and I may have at least bypassed it in one of our daily travels. Unlike most tourists that visit Honolulu, I was insistant on renting a Wrangler so that I could explore the entire island.
My only beef was that crazy arsehole who shut down the main artery on the north shore while he was going on a shooting rampage near a school. I ended up having to go back the same way I went, forcing me to scrap any further plans for that day. I thought I went to HI for a vacation from that inner-city plight?

Here is the latest Monkey creation. Taken with my new Canon Digital Rebel. Iso 100, F2.8, Lens 18-55mm EFS set at 55mm. Same effect as before, desaturated background..I really like this technique.

Thanks Ron.. Here is another taken Monday the 22nd in Waikiki. Major Photoshop work done on this one. Applyed Unsharp Mask to the entire image, then made a copy of the background. I took the original background (unlocked it) and applied Gaussian Blur X3. I also Altered the Hue/saturation (pinks) of this bottom level. On my 2nd copied layer I did a simple lasso to extract the bee and gave him his own layer. I then fiddled with the levels of this layer and gave it an opacity value of 65, so that the blurred bottom layer would be visible. Lastly I took the bee, resharpened once more and darkened his shadow on the flower. Suggestions?

VR, Well, I guess my gallery is right here on this forum....Although the "Purplilly" photo just got hung on my wall 20" X 30" double matted and framed. I had shutterfly.com put it on matte photo paper for me. FYI, They do EXCELLENT WORK!! Check it out! They'll give ya 15 free prints to see the quality of their work. I will be sending ALL of my photos to them for reproduction. Prices are reasonable too. Well, in the spirit of Christmas, here is one I did today bored eating a Christmas dinner of left over pasta. Feeling a little homesick today.

Retouched Fruits of Labor...I cleaned up the bee a bit. Painted some additional detail into her to help draw her into the viewers focal point.

Notice that I super-imposed another leg onto the bee? Thought it looked odd with only 1 leg. Also just noticed some clipping issues with my mask..Can you spot it?

Answering Red's picture spamming question, thought I'd share with anyone who does not know how. Sean, Bottom line, you have tho have them uploaded on some web space somewhere...Did you get any free web hosting space with your cable modem connection? Basically then, use the icon above "Insert Image"...It will give you this... Then, copy and paste the link from your picture like: img]www.blahblah.com/redsgirlies [/img] no spaces.. Basically thats it. Where do you have you agave cactus pic uploaded? You can also buy web hosting space, its damn cheap...heres an idea, go to www.pbase.com, you can get 10 megs of free space, only for photos, and upload the girlies there..I have a trial subscription there too... www.pbase.com/patricstandley/the_flowers_of_hawaii
