Here is a link to preview this camera: www.dpreview.com/articles/canoneos350d/ ;D I just got a Power Shot S70 for the trip to the mainland. This new Eos 350D takes the same battery that the S70 does. and for a price under a thousand bucks I am sure that I will be getting this camera before the end of the year.

Anyone read about/try the sigma sd10? I read a little editorial in a photomag and they mentioned that the fovea (sp?) imaging unit is more like real film (3-layers vs 1), so that although it is a 3.5MP SLR, the quality is better then some of the 5+MP SLRs.

True, so does that mean you tried the camera?

I have heard good things about this camera. Never held one however. The 20D also shoots @8mp, files are fantastic, albiet huge. I say go with it EZ... the money you save can be applied toward lenses. Ah if only I had the 600mm L I have been dreaming about. I brought my 1st gen D-rebel to Iraq and it seems to be holding up. I will need a sensor cleaning when I get home though!
Man I miss this thread section of the boards.

Man I miss this thread section of the boards. I read this article of how a news reporter protected his equipment while shooting in iraq. Basically its a big plastic condom with what amounts to a rubber band over the lens to seal that end without effecting the image. And basically he never opened the "package" until he was inside somewhere out of the elements. I imagine that environment is pretty darn harsh on the gear.

This will probably be my only post in this section because I know squat about cameras. If Iraq is only half as dusty as Afghanistan it's still an area where electronics should never go. My team lost 3 playstation's, 4 TV's, 2 laptops, 2 Xbox's, and countless CD players in the Stan. My laptop held up, but the DVD player on it was toast. I don't know how Iraq is, but I'm sure Monkey's equipment is begging for mercy. On the brightside my Nikon Coolpix camera (old as hell and as big as a breadbox) was completely covered in dust but still works like a champ.

My best friend is in baghdad (sp?) and his first digi cam was broken by the airforce moving his sheit - he didnd even use it once! And now he bought a new one on his time back and also a handicam. I think he uses a plastic bag with a rubberband.

Yeah, thats some pretty harsh conditions for electronics (from what Ive heard). I wonder how those ruggedized military laptops hold up over there. They need to make ruggedized cameras too.

The ruggedized laptops do okay because they have no fans and are underclocked. Of course you can't play any games on them, but for regular computing purposes they're good to go. They can also take a little bit of a beating which is definitely a plus considering all the crazy modes of transportation the military uses. The weak spot on them is probably the CD/DVD player. I just don't know how to keep dust away from there unless you keep it strictly indoors, and even then with all the dust storms, its bound to get contaminated.

No fans? interesting. Maybe they need to move away from CDs and go to USB drives in the desert. lol. Nice to know that they actually work though, I was curious to see if it would be another elephant added to uncle sams white elephant stable

I have a pretty simple solution - anytime you need to open the CD drive, place the laptop and you inside a garbage bag, close the bag, and then put the CD in. Genius. And then just stay in the bag, cuz from what Ive hear, war friggin sucks.
